Expert in the Spotlight: Rob van Looke

Can you introduce yourself briefly?  
My name is Rob Van Looke, and I live in Hulshout. I’ve been working at ABC-Groep for about 13 years. Currently, I work as a senior software engineer and senior Java consultant.  

Can you tell us more about your role?  
My job is to ensure that software development runs efficiently. I also oversee security and support DevOps. I take on tasks that are necessary but often overlooked by others—especially tasks that would consume a lot of time if left undone.  

Think of it like the car production process: software development is comparable to assembling a car. But software engineering goes much further; it encompasses the entire journey from start to finish.  

When a car is delivered, the story doesn’t end there. The customer buys the car, but there also needs to be a garage for maintenance and service. Similarly, software needs to be maintained and supported. My role is to ensure everything around the software is properly set up and continues to evolve, so it keeps functioning smoothly.  

Why did you choose software?  
Software requires constant learning. In my previous job, I realized that once I was ‘up to date,’ I had reached my limit. But my hunger for knowledge and further development is strong, and in this field, that’s a huge advantage.  

What do you enjoy most about your job?  
The biggest challenge. Everything is constantly changing, not just within software development itself, but also everything around it. Think about the tools and platforms on which software runs—they are constantly evolving too.  

Often, not enough attention is given to these supporting systems. I see it as my responsibility as a senior to focus on this, so everything keeps evolving, and new features can be developed smoothly. My goal is to ensure that software can go live with confidence and ease.  

What advice would you give to other IT professionals?  
My main advice is to continuously improve yourself and always stay ahead in the fast-changing IT landscape. This can make a big difference, both within your team and within the company. Furthermore, you can share your knowledge with others and grow together.
